NVQ qualifications are now available for study at Westlands. Now is the time to take advantage of the opportunity to study a language in work related contexts. The knowledge of another language can provide you with a wider choice of employment in Great Britain and Europe.
The NVQ courses emphasise the use of language for communication; continuing with the skills developed at GCSE, but at a higher level. It involves the study and the use of language in more ‘relevant’ work based contexts such as working in the Tourist Industry or Hospitality, combined with learning about different aspects of the culture and society of the country where the language is spoken. The topics studied include:
- Advertising
- Organising events/conferences
- Applying for jobs
- Organising visits
- Developing competence in day-to-day transactions in the Target Language
- Eating Out
- Transport – finding your way
In Westlands Sixth Form, you will benefit from small teaching groups, giving the staff the opportunity to help you and to explain details carefully when you encounter problems. We will encourage and help you find a placement abroad for your work experience, to develop your understanding of the language, its culture and environment.
Students who have studied languages in recent years have gone on to a wide variety of different and exciting careers. Some have proceeded to University to study languages, leading to careers in teaching, translation and interpreting. Others have proceeded to bilingual secretarial courses and to careers in business, banking and tourism.
**Please note that the study of Spanish is not recommended for students who have not studied French at GCSE
